Public spaces are vulnerable to terrorist attacks because they are open, easily accessible and attract a great number of people. The “Security by Design: Protection of Public Spaces” Handbook released by the Joint Research Centre introduces the concept and practical implementation of building security in the design and redesign of public spaces. This Handbook advances a risk-based approach to identify innovative solutions to integrate security aspects in urban planning. ‘Security by design’ champions the principles of accessibility, multi-functionality, sustainability, proportionality, and aesthetics. The Handbook offers practical guidance featuring case studies and real-life examples to illustrate the implementation of a security-by-design measures to maximise the protection of public spaces and prevent terrorist attacks.
