EU Security Union Strategy: connecting the dots in a new security ecosystem

Noting that “terrorists have sought to acquire and ‘weaponise’ chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) materials”, the EU Security Union Strategy 2020-2025 underlines the need for strengthening the EU civil protection response capacities in the field of CBRN and for further enhancing cooperation with third countries on the development of a common culture of CBRN safety and security.

The strategy lays out 4 strategic priorities for action at EU level:

  1. A future-proof security environment
  2. Tackling evolving threats
  3. Protecting Europeans from terrorism and organised crime
  4. A strong European security ecosystem
