A recent Staff Working Document – Enhancing Security through Research and Innovation – published by the European Commission in December 2021 highlights the role of innovation in support of security policies. Cutting-edge technologies are increasingly used for criminal activities and countering such threats requires that prevention and response strategies and approaches are continuously improved and adapted. The document outlines the measures that are being put in place so as to enable an optimal uptake of innovation from research into state-of-the-art tools and services available to EU and national security authorities. Key lines of action in this process include integrating the perspectives of all security research and innovation stakeholders; fostering a forward-looking, capability-driven approach in security; and promoting investment synergies and dissemination of innovation results.
